Hans Steven Beyer-Sebio - The Chosen One

Not just any child could walk this uphill road.
Hans walked it everyday, carrying a load.

Hans showed us heights of courage that we may never reach. Hans showed us what it is to fight; A fight we cannot teach.

Papa & Mama stood beside him knowing there is no guarantee, except for one we started with, to love him endlessly.

Hans is the special chosen one, God knew it from the start. God picked Hans by the measure of his heart.

The one that measured the biggest would someday face a test. What was the challenge? ...To understand that God loves him more, not less.

God used Hans to move our hearts closer to HIS own. Teaching all of us to trust HIS plan and fear not the unknown.

Showing us how to care unselfishly. And bringing wonderful people into our lives. Now, God is tapping Hans' shoulder, both looking down on us, smiling proudly at the wonderful job Hans has done...

WE LOVE YOU SO MUCH HANS, YOU WILL FOREVER BE IN OUR HEARTS...

In Memory of Hans Sebio

I cried and started to ask God why? - Gloria Batalao

When Maggie called me this morning 4:56 AM, California time, I thought she is calling me to tell me when they are coming to California to stay with us. Maggie emailed me last week asking if they could stay with us for a little while awaiting for Hans' full recovery. Hans was getting better everyday as we read from Maggie's latest update. Steve and Maggie both have decided not to bring Hans back to Baguio, but to stay here in the US while recovering instead. I was about to get their room ready then I received this call. The very first words that came out of my mouth was, "but Hans was getting better everyday and feeling better everyday?" I cried and prayed - God, why? Hans was getting better? you gave us hope? and then I remember...God knows best! He knows what is best for Hans and for his families. Knowing that God knows best is comforting enough and gave me peace within my heart.

HANS

Hans Steven Beyer-Sebio was laid to rest Dec. 18, 2008 at the family cemetery at Suello Village, Baguio City. The funeral was attended by over a hundred relatives, friends, and Hans' classmates.

10 years and 8 months, that's how long God lent Hans to us.
10 years and 8 months seemed so short, but the fun memories, lessons learned, and wonderful experiences we had with Hans will last a lifetime.

On behalf of the Celo-Sebio and Suello-Beyer families, Thank you very much for the prayers and support. Ni Apo Dios ti mangamong nga mangsubalit iti amin nga tulong yu ken dakami.

May each and everyone of you have a blessed and Happy Christmas!

Update- Nov. 27

Bill (of Gift of Life) spoke with the doctor taking care of Hans yesterday and according to Bill, the doctor feels that Hans will be needing a lung and heart transplant. These procedures cannot be done very soon because Hans' heart had gotten so weak from the cardiac arrests he's had, so the doctors' plan is to get Hans stronger and hopefully make his heart grow strong (which will require a big miracle for this to happen), before discussing the possibility of a lung and heart transplant. If by miracle Hans will be well enough to go through this procedure, there are two issues that we will have to face. One, will be finding a transplant center who will accept Hans and the other will be the financial aspect. As to my understanding, Gift of Life is still willing to help, but they might not be able to assume the full cost for this operation.
Steve and I are doing our very best to care for Hans and to be strong for him, but with one problem piling up after the other, it is coming to a point where we both are getting depressed and discouraged over these issues.
As of today, Hans has been in a stable condition. We see little improvements each day. He's been sitting up on a recliner for a good 3-4 hours each day, he's appetite is improving little by little, his vitals have been stable, and he is able to keep an acceptable level of his oxygen saturation with the aid of oxygen supplementation. Hopefully, if things will go very smoothly with his recovery, he may be able to be discharged from the hospital next week, but doctors feel that he won't be able to go home without oxygen supplementation.
We once again, ask everyone to please continue praying for Hans. Let us ask the good Lord to bless and provide Hans with all the things he needs to undergo surgery.

Thank you very much for all the love, support and prayers

Update

Nov. 22/08 - Hans was extubated 12 noon (NY time). Doctors did this to see if Hans could tolerate breathing on his own. He is still on the ventilator (via oxygen mask) which helps him breath, but Hans does most of the breathing on his own. Hans' vital signs have been remarkably stable since Monday. He would wake up every now and then, but he has been more sleepy because of the methadone medication. He is being given this med because he has been on Fentanyl (another sleep med to keep him comfortable while on the breathing tube) for a long time that doctors did not want him to have withdrawal symptoms. Around 3 pm, Hans was taken out of the ventilator. He was placed on oxygen supplementation and he was able to tolerate it without dropping his oxygen saturation. Hans have been comfortable throughout the day.

Nov. 23/08 - Hans did very well overnight. Chest x-ray showed some more improvement with his lungs (lesser congestion). He looked weak during the morning, so around 12:30 noon, he was put back on the ventilator, just to give him a break from getting too exhausted from breathing on his own. Most of his intravenous medications are now being administered orally through his NG tube.

We, his parents, ask that we all continue praying for Hans. We do believe that the little improvements in Hans' health is the work of God (through our prayers) and that HE is merely using the doctors, nurses, medications, and machines as HIS intrument in restoring Hans back to good health.

Thank you very much for the love, support, and prayers. Once again, please continue praying for Hans.

update Nov. 20

I'm sorry Steve and I are not able to continuously provide an update on Hans as we are staying with him in the hospital 24/7 and we have very limited access to the internet.
Anyway, Hans has been stable these past few days. Some of his intravenous medications are now being administered orally through his NG tube. Hopefully, Hans will continue to show some progress with his health.
As of today, the doctors have lowered down Hans' epinephrine med (for his heart and bloodpressure) and so far, Hans is able to tolerate it. His ventilator volume was also lowered down and if he continues to keep his oxygen saturation at an acceptable level throughout the night, he may be taken out of the ventilator tomorrow.
Steve and I believe that God is hearing and answering our prayers so please, let us continue praying for Hans' full and speedy recovery.
Thank you very much and my family and I are truly thankful for all your support and prayers...
Once again, please continue praying for Hans.

Report from Bill - Notary of NY

To all, I do not have good news to report on Hans except to say that he and his family are doing the best they can. I spoke to the doctor who is in charge of pediatric cardiology...
on Monday and Fredlee spoke to him yesterday. Hans has a heart that is so severely damaged that surgery is not an option. Furthermore, his condition is such that he cannot be moved to hospice care or really provides any type of care except to make him comfortable. Hans' grandparents arrived late Saturday night to be supportive with the family. As you may know, Hans' younger brother and father also came in about two weeks ago when the severity of the cardiac problem was discovered at the hospital. Hans is getting the best care possible at the Pediatric ICU at NYU Hospital. They keep him sedated much of the time in order to keep the breathing tube in place. When he is awake, he responds to family and what is going on around him. We do not know how much longer Hans' damaged heart can continue to sustain him. All we can do is to keep this very nice family in our thoughts and prayers as they go through what is the most difficult period any parent can face. The only good news for all of us is that the family knows that they have an extended family here in NYC and they have expressed their gratitude to me. I am especially appreciative to Sheri Best for her warm invocation this Monday at our Rotary luncheon; it was just what we needed. Continue to pray and hold Hans and his family in your heart during these trying days. We will update everyone as the situation warrants. Yours in Rotary, Bill

Marilyn Enciso's Email

Magie,
We will continue to pray for you and your family. It is very difficult to watch Hans suffer - but like you said, he is still here. There has to be a reason why God has not taken him.

I believe our lives are not our own, and we are on this earth for a purpose.

Continue to have faith Magie. Our God is an awesome God.

God bless Hans, you, Steve, and your little girl.

Maggie's Email - Hans had 2 more cardiac arrersts

Hans had two more cardiac arrests last night. Steve and I talked to him and we told him that if it's so hard for him already, it's okay to let go. We asked him to go towards the bright light where Jesus is waiting for him, but after that, Hans started coming back to us again. I guess he's not ready to go yet.
Hans is stable but in critical condition. Hans is being given a slim chance of survival which is better than none at all. Hans is being brave and fighting so hard to be with us, so let us continue praying for him. With God, nothing is impossible and I believe in miracles.

Once again, please continue praying for a miracle for Hans.

Thank you.

Maggie's Email - Hans rushed to the ER

Hans was rushed in to the Emergency Room of NYU Medical Center, Sunday night. He had a cardiac arrest Monday morning and the doctors were able to revive him after 15 mins. He is now at the Pediatric ICU of NYU. He started having fever last night due to pneumonia but he is in stable condition.
I spoke with the critical care head doctor and according to him, Hans' heart is very weak that only a transplant can bring him back up to his feet. NYU does not do heart transplants so, they will be getting in touch with Cornell University Hospital (which is one of the biggest heart transplant facility in the US) to see if NYU could get to transfer Hans' care there.

Hans is fighting so hard for his life so, Please continue praying for him that Cornell will accept him and that things will go well with him.

God is good and I'm sure He has good plans for Hans, otherwise Hans should have left us all already.

Thank you and please, please continue praying for Hans.

Steve and Maggie
